Gurgaon is the best city for setting up a software or a business process outsourcing centre in India. The Haryana city is home to dozens of top BPO firms, earning it the sobriquet: India's outsourcing hub.

Great physical and supporting infrastructure, availability of ample talent, impressive real estate boom, affordable cost of living, good governmental support, etc make Gurgaon the ideal choice for an IT-BPO centre. Beside this, workforce and proximity to the airport are some other crucial factors that are heavily considered by most investors before starting a BPO in Gurgaon.

However, Gurgaon on its own might not bag the honours: other areas like Delhi, Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad, put together make this region a powerhouse when it comes to BPOs.

Bengaluru, the capital of Karnataka, is also called the Silicon Valley of India due to its towering stature in the field of information technology.

Bengaluru is home to India's best known IT firms like Infosys and Wipro. The city is also the nation's biotechnology hub.

3. Chennai

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu, has emerged as a major exporter of software, IT, ITeS services in India.

No sooner did companies begin to find that Bengaluru's existing infrastructure might not be able to handle the unprecedented IT boom than they began to shift to cities like Chennai. Chennai offers a magnificent talent pool, good infrastructure, many software parks, etc and also an enabling business environment to encourage IT-BPO firms to set up base there.

Chennai is also a major automobiles and electronics hub.

4. Pune

Already IT giants Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, Wipro, Infosys and Tech Mahindra have their base here.

5. Mumbai

Mumbai, the commercial capital of India, is one of the world's top ten trade centres. The city contributes 25 per cent of industrial output and 70 per cent of capital transactions to India's economy.

Mumbai, as befits a nation's financial capital, has seen a major economic boom ever since India embraced economic reforms. This has led to big ticket investments being made in the city in almost all sectors, especially the IT, ITeS and BPO sector.

The city is home to a huge talent pool and although its infrastructure leaves a lot to be desired, it still is one of the best places in India to do business in.

6. Kolkata

Currently in focus following the controversy over Singur -- where the Tatas are setting up the prestigious Nano plant -- the city might however lose out on newer investments because of the fear in the minds of industrialists and investors who believe that anti-industry forces might lead to losses for them

7. Mohali & Chandigarh

Mohali sits cheek by jowl to Chandigarh. The Punjab and Haryana governments' incentives and friendly policies have seen many an IT-BPO firm set up base in the two cities. A vibrant IT talent pool, apart from impressive infrastructure attracts IT-BPO companies to these cities.
The existence of technology parks and other facilities geared to promoting IT companies has helped Mohali and Chandigarh emerge as the new challengers to India's top BPO centres.

8. Jaipur

The capital of Rajasthan, Jaipur is a major IT-BPO centre. The city has seen large investments by Genpact, Infosys, etc in the IT BPO sector, making it a vibrant destination for such companies.

The boom in the IT sector in Jaipur has also led to a mushrooming of shopping malls, large retail outlets, entertainment facilities, etc. The boom has also attracted big funds into the city's real estate sector too.

Jaipur households are the 6th most prosperous in India. However, the absolute figures for the city were not available, although they are supposed to be less than Rs 328,000 and more than Rs 298,000 per year.

9. Nagpur

Nagpur, the second capital of Maharashtra, has for long suffered due to lack of strong leadership and political will. Thus the manufacturing boom that many other Indian cities embraced with elan bypassed Nagpur. However, as if to compensate for this 'loss,' the city has turned into a major trading hub.

Strategically located, Nagpur is the largest city in central India with excellent educational institutions that churn out a fine talent pool. The city's impressive infrastructure, new supporting governmental policies, an enabling and peaceful business environment, availability of a huge knowledge pool, etc have seen a number of IT firms setting up base here.

A proposed special economic zone that will house a major international cargo hub and also information technology companies will further boost the city's allure for IT firms.

At Rs 298,000, Nagpur is the 10th most prosperous city in terms of average annual household income in India.

10. Mysore

Following the 'saturation' of Bengaluru, the Karnataka government has been working towards making other centres in the state come up and be a part of the IT boom sweeping the nation.

Thus, Mysore too began to attract many an IT company. In the last five years, billions of dollars have been invested in Mysore, especially by IT majors to set up huge development centres.

11. Madurai

Madurai has been a beneficiary of Tamil Nadu's pro-IT sector policy that helps the growth of IT firms in the state and helps attract more investment in the sector.

Nasscom identifies Madurai as a city with great potential to become a big BPO hub. Already many IT-BPO companies have begun to set up base in this city.

12. Kochi

Kochi, considered the financial capital of Kerala, has traditionally been famous for trade in spices, textiles, tourism, and fishing.
However, with its abundant talent pool, it was only a matter of time before it took the services sector by a storm. In recent times, Kochi has seen a major economic boom fuelled by large-scale investments , especially in the IT-BPO sector.

Kochi offers all that the IT sector firms need to prosper and that has seen many an IT park come up in the city housing IT majors.
