10 Delightfully Delicious Indian Dishes
Indian cuisine is becoming increasingly popular in restaurants and homes around the globe. With dishes ranging from mild to spicy, it’s easy to find an Indian dish to suit your palate. To make things even better, most are incredibly easy to prepare. Try a few of these great Indian dishes on for size.
10. Butter Chicken
10. Butter Chicken
Butter chicken is one of the most popular Indian dishes in the entire world. Formally known as Murg Makhani, this tantalizing dish can be made to suit the taste buds of just about any diner - hot, medium, or mild. Delicious with a side of black lentil beans and a salad, this dish promises to please any fan of Indian cuisine. Common ingredients include lime, cinnamon, garlic paste, cumin, coriander, peppercorns, dried fenugreek, butter, and a myriad of other delicious additives.
9. Chicken Tikka Masala
Chicken Tikka Masala, not to be confused with chicken marsala is another commonly prepared favorite. Tikka, which means bits, refers to small pieces of chicken. So in Tikka Masala you’ll find plenty of small pieces of chicken first marinated in a special sauce, later grilled, and finally added to a thick gravy sauce. You have to plan this dish in advance as you’ll want to marinate the chicken for at least 12 hours, or overnight.
8. Malai Kofta
Malai Kofta is a fragrant and delicious dish that essentially translates into vege-balls lavishly coated in a thick, dreamy sauce. We’ve seen Malai Kofta referred to as the vegetarian’s preferred choice over meatballs, and we’re inclined to agree. This dish, chock full of potatoes, beans, peas, carrots, corn, cream, and a litany of spices, is indeed very tasty.
7. Palak Paneer
A favorite dish prepared primarily in the northern sections of India, Palak Paneer is a great dish for those with softer palates (ie. those who don’t necessarily enjoy a spicy kick with every meal). The main ingredients, cottage cheese and spinach, are mixed with a myriad of spices and cooked until soft and then mashed into a delightfully soft pulp.
6. Chaat
Chaat, or Tikki Ki Chaat, is one of the most popular snack foods in India. Also often referred to as Ragda Pattice, this yummy snack food is similar to a potato pancake made with a carefully blended mixture of spices. The potato patties are fried on a griddle until golden brown and are served with a mixture of chickpeas and additional spices to enhance the taste - an absolutely delightful experience!
5. Tandoori Chicken
Also known as Tandoori Murgh, Tandoori Chicken is yet another famous Indian food that has made its way to tables around the globe. The dish mixes the popular Tandori Masala marinade with chicken, yogurt, and just a few spices. One of the easiest Indian dishes to prepare, Tandoori Chicken promises to be a hit in any household.
4. Rogan Josh
Rogan Josh is an amazing lamb (or chicken) dish served with Kashmiri chili peppers. Kashmiri peppers, believe it or not, are not as spicy as you might imagine. Prepared with yogurt, bay leaves, peppercorns, coriander, and a myriad of other spices, this mild dish is both colorful and tasteful. There are several different version of this dish but all, based on the Kashmiri pepper, are bound to bring a smile to your face.
3. Chole
Chole, or chickpea curry, is a simple Indian dish you can easily make at home to serve as a side dish or even as an appetizer. The main ingredients include chickpeas, onions, and tomatoes. You’ll use a wide variety of spices, including the most commonly used garlic paste, ginger paste, ginger root, cumin, and coriander - amongst others, of course. Serve this dish hot and you’re bound to receive rave reviews.
2. Kaali Daal
Kaali Daal, sometimes referred to as Ma Ki Daal, is yet another popular dish from North India. Known in layman’s terms as mom’s lentils, this black lentil dish is wholesome and easy to prepare. The black lentils, or urad daal, are prepared with onions, chillies, and a few other spices and are added to a delicious sauce with a cream base. Cooking the lentils takes time but this dish is definitely worth the hard work.
1. Naan
Naan is a traditional leavened Indian flatbread, commonly served with almost every Indian meal. Usually cooked in an earthen oven or Tandoor, this bread can easily be made in any modern conventional oven as well. The bread will make a perfect side dish to go with your Tandoori Chicken, Palak Paneer, or to have as a snack all by itself.
